‘Jennifer Lanahan,’ the lobbyist
라스베이거스에는 유난히도 사교적인 모임이 많다. 여러 모임에 참석하다 보면 자주 만나는 사람들도 있다. 직업군도 다양하다. 그러한 주류의 모임에서 처음 제니퍼를 만났다. 몇 번 얼굴을 마주치는 정도였는데, 뜻밖에도 한인회 모임에서도 만나게 되었다.
매우 이국적으로 생긴 그가 한인 모임에 자주 참석하는 것이 신기했다. 알고 보니 한국 사람이었다. 제니퍼 라나한(Jennifer Lanahan). 그는 생후 4개월 때 하와이 넬리스 공군기지에서 근무하는 미국 가정에 입양되었다. 아버지가 은퇴하신 후 위스콘신주 그린베이로 이주했고 대부분의 시간을 그 곳에서 보냈다. 제니퍼는 위스콘신대를 졸업하고 애리조나 주립대 법과대에서 석사학위를 받았다. 이후 동생을 따라 베가스로 이주하며 UNLV 로스쿨에 합격했다. 그는 “이 기회를 인생에서 내린 최고의 결정이었다고 자부해요. 베가스가 세계적인 도시이고, 앞으로 펼쳐질 변호사로서의 인생이 크게 기대되었습니다.”라고 회상했다.
로스쿨을 졸업하고 제니퍼는 칼슨 시티의 Nevada Legislature에서 인턴으로 일했다. 그는 여기에서 공공 정책과 정부 업무에 대한 열정이 확고해졌다고 한다. 다시 법률적인 지식을 더욱 확고하게 하기 위해 Gilbert Employment Law라는 로펌에 입사했다. 여기에서 그는 채용 차별과 고용인 문제에 대해 다루었다. 그 후 Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith 법률회사에서 일반 책임법과 환대법을 진행했다. 이러한 다양한 경험을 바탕으로 제니퍼는 로비 업무에 뛰어들었다. 현재는 네바다 사무소에서 대정부 업무 담당 이사로 재직중이다. “저는 대정부 업무로 복귀할 수 있어서 매우 기뻤습니다. 우리 회사는 여러 주에 지점을 두고 로비 업무를 수행하고 있어요. 저의 업무는 주 및 지방 선출직 공무원 앞에서 고객의 요구 사항을 옹호하는 데 중점을 두고 있습니다.”라고 그의 주업무를 설명했다.
최근에는 네바다주와 한국 간에 상호협정이 체결되도록 한인 사회를 적극적으로 돕고 있다. 제니퍼는 “이 협약을 통해 한국과의 운전 면허증 교류를 활성화하고, 나아가 나라 간의 경제적 교류에까지 확대하고 있습니다. 불필요한 관료적 단계를 생략하고 훨씬 실질적인 기회를 유치하는 데 힘쓰고 있습니다.” 라고 전했다. 그의 이력에 대해 짚어보는 것은 매우 중요한 포인트를 지니고 있다. 변호사로서 활동하는 것뿐만 아니라, 로비스트로서 정부와 민간을 두루 접하며 베가스 주류 사회에서 한인의 영향력을 크게 넓혀가기 때문이다.

제니퍼는 한인 커뮤니티를 위한 너무나도 소중한 인재다. 입양아라는 사실을 숨기지 않고 당당히 밝히며 오히려 한인 커뮤니티를 위해 적극적으로 활동하고 있다. 그는 “한국 커뮤니티와의 교류는 제 정체성에 절대적으로 도움이 됩니다. 같은 동포로서 따뜻함, 포용, 열정의 느낌을 가지며 큰 축복을 받았다고 생각해요. 저는 100% 한국인인데, 문화적으로는 0%에 가깝기 때문에 이러한 괴리감이 저에겐 큰 갈등이었습니다. 하지만 반갑게 저를 맞아주는 공동체가 있다는 것이 특별하게 다가왔죠.” 라며 한인으로서의 정체성을 찾아가는 경로를 설명했다.
그는 친부모가 자신을 포기한 일에 대해 오히려 부모의 마음을 헤아리고 감사한 마음을 가지고 있다. 지금의 부모님은 무조건적인 사랑과 지원을 아끼지 않았고, 지금의 그가 될 수 있게 헌신하셨다고 전한다. “어릴 때 부모님의 팔에 안겨 왜 내가 다른 사람들과 이렇게 달라야 하냐고 울며 물었던 것을 뚜렷하게 기억해요. 나이가 들면서 그런 정체성 혼란을 겪은 나보다 부모님의 마음이 더 아팠다는 것을 알게 되었어요. 저는 특별한 사랑을 받은 사람으로서 더 긍정적인 사람이 될 수 있었던 것 같습니다.”
제니퍼는 다른 입양아들에게 전하고 싶은 말이 있다. “그들의 혼란이 타당성을 갖고 있더라도 그것을 결합이나 약점으로 받아들일 필요는 없다고 말해주고 싶어요. 저는 내 정체성을 찾는 일이 나를 더욱 자신감 충만한 사람으로 만들어 주었어요. 세상에서 정해진 틀에 나를 맞추려고 애쓸 필요가 없다는 결론에 도달했어요. 정체성의 혼란스러움을 마주하는 순간이 바로 내 인생의 터닝포인트의 시작이라고 생각했으면 좋겠습니다. 반드시 극복할 수 있습니다.” 그의 단단하게 완성된 인성을 마주하니, 경외심마저 갖게 되었다.

그는 앞으로의 포부에서도 한인으로서의 긍지가 대단하다. “저는 주류에 진출해 있는 멋진 한인들을 드러내고 그들의 기여도를 알리고 싶어요. 그리고 한인 대표로서 법률, 정치, 정부와 연관되어 적극적인 역할을 해 나갈 것입니다. 저는 독일과 아일랜드 가정에서 자랐기 때문에 문화적 교류에 특히 관심이 많습니다. 가장 기대되는 것은 한인 여성 전문가들이 만나 서로의 삶의 이야기를 공유하고 그 경험을 통해 유대감을 형성하고 활동으로 이어 나갈 수 있는 모임을 만들고 싶습니다. 성공을 위한 차세대 여성 양성이라고 해도 좋겠습니다.” 제니퍼의 정체성은 거의 완성에 가깝지 않나 싶다.
베가스 주류에는 한인 혈통으로서 성공한 전문가들이 많은 편이다. 그들 대부분이 어머니가 한인이라는 것에 큰 자부심을 가지고 있다. 제니퍼는 비록 입양으로 미국에 오게 되었지만 누구보다도 잘 자랐고, 스스로 자신의 정체성을 찾으면서 더 승화된 인생관을 갖게 되었다. 앞으로의 그의 눈부신 활약을 기대하며 진정한 마음의 박수를 보내고 싶다.

There are unusually many social gatherings in Las Vegas. Some people meet often when they attend many meetings. There are also a variety of occupations. I first met Jennifer at such a mainstream meeting. I met her at a Korean community meeting unexpectedly even though I met her a few times.
Looking very exotic, it was surprising that he often attended Korean American gatherings. Turns out she was Korean. Jennifer Lanahan was adopted by an American family working at Nellis Air Force Base in Hawaii when she was four months old. After her father retired, she moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin, and spent most of her time there. Jennifer graduated from the University of Wisconsin and received her master's degree from Arizona State University School of Law. She followed her younger brother to Vegas, where she passed UNLV Law School. She recalled, "I'm proud to have taken this opportunity as the best decision I've ever made in my life. Vegas is a world-class city, and I was looking forward to my future career as a lawyer."
After graduating from law school, Jennifer worked as an intern at the Nevada Legal Nature in Carlson City. She is said to have developed a passion for public policy and government work here. Again, she joined a law firm called Gilbert Employment Law to further solidify her legal knowledge. Here, she addressed hiring discrimination and employee issues. Afterwards, she worked at Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith Law firm on general responsibility and hospitality. With her various experiences, Jennifer entered the lobbying business. She is currently serving as the director of government affairs at the Nevada office. "I was delighted to be able to return to my job as a government employee. Our company has several state offices where I lobby. My job focuses on advocating for client requirements in front of state and local elected officials," she explained.
Recently, the Korean community has been actively helping to conclude a mutual agreement between Nevada and Korea. Jennifer said, "Through this agreement, we are promoting driver's license exchanges with Korea and even expanding economic exchanges between countries. We are committed to attracting more practical opportunities without unnecessary bureaucratic steps." Pointing out her history is very important. Not only is he working as a lawyer, but he also has access to the government and the private sector as a lobbyist, greatly expanding Koreans' influence in the Vegas mainstream.
Jennifer is a very precious human resource for the Korean community. She has confidently revealed that she is an adopted child and is actively working for the Korean community. She said, "Exchange with the Korean community is absolutely helpful to my identity. As a fellow Korean, I feel I have been blessed with a sense of warmth, inclusion, and passion. I am 100 percent Korean, but culturally it is close to 0 percent, so this sense of separation was a huge conflict for me. But it was special to have a community that welcomed me." She explained her way to find her identity as a Korean.
She understands and appreciates her parents' feelings for giving up on her. She says her parents did not spare unconditional love and support, and dedicated themselves to being who she is. "I clearly remember being held in my parents' arms as a child and crying and asking why I had to be so different from the people I left. As I got older, I found out that my parents felt more hurt than I did when I experienced such identity confusion. As a person who received special love, I feel like I could have been a more positive person."
Jennifer has something to say to other adoptees. "I want to tell them that even if their confusion may hold true, they don't have to take it as a defect or a weakness. Finding my identity has made me a more confident person. I have come to the conclusion that I don't have to struggle to fit myself into a set frame in the world. I hope you think that the moment you face the confusion of your identity is the beginning of your turning point in your life. I can overcome it for sure." Facing his tightly completed personality, I even had a sense of awe.
She is proud of himself as a Korean in her future career. "I want to reveal wonderful Koreans who are in the mainstream and let them know their contribution. As a representative of the Korean people, I will play an active role in relation to the law, politics, and the government. As I grew up in a German and Irish family, I am particularly interested in cultural exchange. What I am most looking forward to most is to create an event where Korean female experts can meet and share their stories and share their experiences to build bonds and lead to activities. I would like to say that we are the next generation of female candidates for success." Jennifer's identity is almost complete.
There are many successful professionals in the Vegas mainstream who are of Korean descent. Most of them take great pride in their mother being Korean. Jennifer grew up better than anyone else, even though she came to the U.S. through adoption, and she has a more sublimated outlook on life as she found her identity. I look forward to his outstanding performance in the future, and I want to give her a real round of applause.
