Dr. Lee's Narrative of Achieving His Dream: "Passion for Dentistry"

“내가 왜 치과 의사가 되었냐고 묻기보다는 어떻게 되었느냐고 묻는 것이 더 맞을 거에요. 왜냐고 묻는다면 지금 치과 가운을 입고 있는 내가 내 인생의 미스터리입니다. 처음 공부할 때 바늘과 기계 소음 등 모든 것이 싫었으니까요. 하지만 어떤 과정을 거쳐 지금이 있느냐고 묻는다면 제 기적의 이야기를 들을 수 있습니다.” 정겨운 눈웃음으로 긴장을 풀어주었던 그가 사뭇 진지했다. 이지적인 그의 어법이 더욱 관심을 갖게했고 더 궁금해졌다… 그의 스토리가.
“내가 UC. 데이비스에서 생화학과(Biochemistry)를 졸업할 무렵 뭔가 다른 일을 하고 싶었지만 치과의가 되겠다는 결심을 했습니다. 제가 2살 때 미국으로 데려오신 어머니는 어려운 살림에 홀로 저를 키우셨고, 저는 더이상 가난하게 살고 싶지 않았죠. 그래서 더 악착같이 공부했고 몇 년 후면 새 차를 살 수 있다는 꿈에 부풀었어요.” 차분하게 지난 시간을 돌아보는 그에게 어두운 표정이 스쳤다. “인생이 그렇게 단순했더라면…” 그는 말끝을 흐렸다.
마지막 학기에 떠났던 스노우보드 여행은 그의 인생을 송두리째 바꿔놓았다. 그는 친구들과 차를 타고 돌아오는 길에 프리웨이에서 대형트럭과 정면충돌하는 사고를 당했다. 그의 친구는 목숨을 잃었고, 머리와 목을 다친 그는 혼수상태에 빠졌다. 정신이 돌아온 순간부터 ‘왜 나는 살아있는가…”하는 자괴감이 그를 지배했다. 친구를 잃었다는 아픔이 너무도 컸다.
몇 년간의 수술과 재활 운동을 통해 그는 정상적인 생활을 하게 되었지만, 현실적인 그의 꿈은 모두 사라졌다. “비극적인 사건 중에 설명할 수 없는 일들은 존재에 대한 패러다임을 바꿔놓을 수 있습니다.” 그는 오랜 방황 끝에 생명공학 연구 분야에서 10년 동안 일하면서 생명의 소중함을 배웠고, 그의 꿈을 다시 찾을 수 있었다. “부와 영광에 대한 욕망으로 어린 시절을 보냈지만, 치유의 봉사를 통해 나는 욕망을 걷어낸 ‘치과의사’라는 나의 꿈으로 다시 돌아오게 되었습니다.” 그는 비영리단체와의 협업으로 남태평양 국가와 멕시코 국경 지역 그리고 필리핀의 여러 고아원에서 치과에 관련된 봉사를 했다. 충치로부터 치아를 보호하는 방법이나 소외된 사람들에게 치과 임플란트 시술을 시행했다. “수 년간의 영혼 탐색과 회복 끝에 나는 완전한 ‘원’을 이루었어요. 교통사고 후 10년이 넘어서야 크레이튼 대학교에서 전공의가 되었죠. 저는 봉사를 통해 내 일이 내 삶의 필수적인 부분으로 자리잡게 되었습니다. 그래서 내 일을 즐겁게 여기고, 환자를 치료하는 것이 축복이라고 생각합니다.” 이렇게 그의 고되고 승화된 삶의 여정을 듣는다는 것만으로도 감동이 밀려왔다.
이원장은 현재 치과를 운영하면서 새로운 기법의 틀니 시술에 몰두하고 있다. 그리고 임플란트 시술을 좀더 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 연구하는 중이다. 궁극적으로 ‘치아’가 필요한 사람에게 번거로운 실패를 경험하지 않도록 영구적인 시술을 제공하기를 원한다. “제가 집중하고 있는 올온포(All On Four)는 이름 그대로 4개의 임플란트만으로 틀니를 영구적으로 고정시켜서 환자가 크고 무거운 틀니를 탈부착할 필요없이 새로우 영구치를 갖게하는 것입니다. 가장 이상적인 치료 방법이기 때문에 채택하게 되었고, 많은 분들이 ‘치아’의 불편함으로부터 자유로워지기를 원합니다.”라고 그는 강조한다.

So I studied harder and dreamed that in a few years I would be able to buy a new car.” A dark expression crossed his mind as he calmly looked back on the past time. “If only life were that simple…” ” He trailed off.
A pivotal snowboarding trip during his final semester altered the course of Dr. Lee's existence. Tragically, a fateful collision on the freeway claimed the life of a dear friend and left Dr. Lee in a coma, grappling with the profound question of his own survival. The ensuing journey of recovery, marked by surgeries and rehabilitation, reshaped his outlook on life, propelling him towards a renewed sense of purpose and a rekindled dream of dental practice.
