Draw a Beautiful Korean 'Soul' ... Calligraphy Exhibition

그리스어에 어원을 둔 캘리그래피. ‘아름답다’(kallos)와 ‘필적’(graphy)의 합성어로 ‘글이 가지고 있는 뜻에 맞게 아름답게 쓰다’는 표현을 지닌다. 언뜻 생각하기에는 취미활동으로 하는 사람들이 쓰는 글씨라고 협소하게 생각할 수 있지만, 캘리그래피는 그야말로 ‘대세’라고 할 수 있다.
영화 포스터 제목, 광고, 제품 이름 등 캘리그래피로 쓰이지 않은 것을 찾기가 어려울 정도이다. 사물이 지닌 의미를 가장 잘 표현해 주는 글씨 기법이어서 문자 그 이상의 힘을 갖는다. 시각적 커뮤니케이션의 수단으로, 감성 디자인으로서 활용 가치도 매우 높다.
베가스에도 캘리그래피를 배우는 모임이 있다. 대한민국 미술대전에서 특선을 수상한 우봉 김정현 화백이 이끄는 캘리그래피 교실이다. 3월 초 제자들의 작품을 처음으로 올리기 위해 전시회를 준비하는 문화교실로 찾아가 보았다.
마침 한국에서 주문한 작품 족자들이 도착했다. 회원들은 환호성을 올리며 자신의 작품들을 조심스럽게 꺼내어 벽에 걸었다. 그동안 고생하며 완성한 작품들을 곱게 매만지는 모습들이 너무 보기 좋았다. 큰 웃음 소리와 나누는 담소 속에서도 조용히 연습에 몰입하는 회원들도 진지해 보였다. 조용히 입장한 조병립 회원은 “먹향이 너무 좋습니다. 은은한 향과 함께 작업에 몰입하면 마음이 맑아집니다.”라고 말했다.
전시회를 갖는 8명의 회원들은 기획 회의를 하느라 분주했다. 이번에는 캘리그래피와 함께 문인화 전시도 이루어진다. 회원들에게 소감을 묻자, 민주란 회원은 “서로 간의 ‘소통’이 얼마나 중요한지를 배웠습니다. 준비하면서 선택할 일들이 많기 때문에 무엇보다 의견을 잘 수렴하고 조율하는 데 마음을 다 했죠.”라고 소감을 표현했다. 우민지 회원은 “매일 바쁜 일상인데 여기 와서 붓을 들며 집중할 수 있어서 좋아요. 선 하나 긋는 것도 쉽지 않지만 그 순간들이 오히려 힐링이 됩니다.”라며 즐거워했고, 김시온 회원은 “회원들과의 교감이 너무 좋습니다. 솔선수범하고 배려심도 깊고 모습들을 보면서 베가스에 이렇게 재능 있고 따뜻한 사람들이 있구나…하는 생각을 합니다.”라며 활짝 웃었다. 제시카 박 회원은 “학교 다니는 아이들 뒷바라지하면서도 틈틈이 나와 붓을 듭니다. 조용히 집중하며 그리는 즐거움이 커요.”라고 말하며, 조용히 작업에 몰두했다.
캘리그래피 회원들은 완성도를 높여 전시회까지 준비하면서 자신들의 작품 작업 활동에 대해 자부심이 대단하다.
모두들 분주한 가운데 김화백의 아내이며 문인화가인 김혜옥 여사가 정성껏 준비한 점심이 차려졌다. 푸짐한 떡국 한 그릇을 앞에 놓고 준비 과정에서 겪은 이야기들로 수다꽃을 피웠다. 이번 전시회를 주관하는 박진영 관장은 “나는 무엇인가…하는 절실한 물음이 저를 여기로 이끌었어요. 아이들은 다 크고 크게 할 일이 없었는데 좋은 그룹이 생겨서 너무 좋았죠. 전시회를 준비하는 요즘 식구들이 ‘이제야 재능을 찾았네?’하고 응원해 줍니다.”라고 말하며, “한 작품을 위해 50여 장이 넘게 글을 쓰고 그림을 그립니다. 작품이 나왔구나…하는 순간 그 쾌감은 정말 크죠. 11월부터 전시회 준비하며 만감이 교차합니다.”라고 회고했다.
이 그룹에 기둥 역할을 맡고 있는 민주란 회원도 “일을 바쁘게 하다보니 작품을 위해 밤을 새우는 일이 많았어요. 그냥 배우는 것과 전시회를 준비하는 것은 큰 차이가 있어요. 실력도 쑥쑥 늘어납니다. 고요한 밤에 작업할 때 정말 행복했습니다.”라고 소감을 표했다.
우봉 김화백은 “처음 치루는 것이지만 무난히 전시회 준비를 마무리하고 있어서 감사합니다. 소극적인 회원이라 할지라도 ‘할 수 있다’라는 자신감으로 용기를 북돋워 줍니다. 다른 거 없습니다. 오직 자아를 찾는 작업을 즐겁게 수행하길 바라죠. 열심히 하나의 결실을 맺는 우리 회원들이 자랑스럽습니다.”라고 격려했다.
회의하랴, 설거지하랴 분주히 움직이는 회원들의 뒷모습이 부러운 느낌도 들었다. 고무장갑을 낀 손을 흔들며 “작가의 품격을 갖게 해 주셔서 감사한 마음입니다.” 박진영 단장의 활짝 개인 미소가 유난히 예뻐보이는 시간이었다.
캘리그라피와 문인화 작품을 함께 전시하는 이번 전시회는 3월5일부터 6월9일까지 열릴 예정이다. 오프닝 리셉션은 3월7일5시~7시에 있을 예정이다.

Calligraphy, which has an etymology from Greek. It is a compound word of "kallos" and "writing" and has the expression "to write beautifully according to the meaning of the text." At first glance, it may seem narrow that it is written by people who do it as a hobby, but calligraphy is truly a popular writing.
It is difficult to find things that are not used in calligraphy, such as movie poster titles, advertisements, and product names. It is a writing technique that best expresses the meaning of an object, so it has more power than letters. As a means of visual communication, it is also very valuable as an emotional design.
There is also a group that learns calligraphy in Vegas. It is a calligraphy class led by artist Kim Jung-hyun who won a special prize at the Korean Art Exhibition. In early March, I visited a culture class preparing for an exhibition to upload the first works of my students.
Just in time, the works ordered from Korea arrived. Members cheered and carefully took out their works and hung them on the wall. It was so nice to see them smoothing the works they had worked hard on. Even in the midst of loud laughter and chat, the members quietly immersed themselves in practice seemed serious. Cho Byung-rip, a member who entered quietly, said, "The scent of black ink is so good. When I immerse myself in the work with a subtle scent, my heart clears up."
The eight members of the exhibition were busy having a planning meeting. This time, there will be a calligraphy and a literary exhibition. When asked about her impressions, Min Ju-ran said, "I learned how important 'communication' between each other is. I had many things to choose from while preparing, so I did my best to collect and coordinate opinions." Woo Min-ji said, "It's a busy daily life, but it's nice to be here and focus with a brush. It's not easy to draw a line, but those moments heal me." Kim Xion said, "I love communication with the members. I can see such talented and warm people in Vegas by leading by example and being considerate." She smiled broadly, Jassica saying, "I take care of the children in school, but I lift the brush with my eyes whenever I can. I have a lot of fun while quietly concentrating."
While everyone was busy, lunch was prepared sincerely by Kim Hye-ok, Kim's wife and literary artist. They placed a bowl of rice cake soup in front of them and talked about their experiences in the preparation process. Park Jin-young, the director of this exhibition, recalled, "A desperate question, 'What am I?' led me here. They were all grown up and didn't have much to do, but I was so happy to have a good group. Today's family members preparing for the exhibition say, 'Now I have found my talent?' and added, "I write and draw more than 50 pictures for one piece of art. The moment I see a piece of art… The joy is huge. I have mixed feelings while preparing for the exhibition since November."
Min Ju-ran, a member of the group who plays a role as a pillar, also said, "As I was busy with my work, I stayed up all night for my work. There is a big difference between just learning and preparing for an exhibition. My skills improve rapidly. I was really happy when I was working on it at night."
Woobong Kim said, "It's my first time here, but thank you for finishing the preparations for the exhibition without much effort. Even a passive member encourages me with confidence that I can do it. There is nothing else. Let's just enjoy the task of finding yourself. I'm proud of our members who work hard and bear one fruit."
