최근 몇 년간 BTS와 BLACK PINK 등 K-POP 가수들이 휩쓸고 지나간 베가스인 터라, 로컬 시민들의 움직임을 보면 대체로 그 그룹의 인기를 가늠할 수 있다.
BTS 공연 때는 라스베이거스 전역이 들썩이며 경제 효과가 로컬까지도 어마어마한 수준이었다. BLACK PINK 공연 때는 단 1회였지만 스트립의 모든 조명들이 핑크색으로 물들었으며, 아마도 로컬의 한인들은 몇 집 걸러 한 집은 그 공연을 보았을 것이다. 거주자에만 한한 것이 아니었다. 일가 친척, 친구, 지인들이 세계 각지에서 몰려들었다. 이 덕분에 집을 자주 방문하지 않던 자녀들까지도 반갑게 만나는 특수를 누렸다.
사실 이번 트와이스 공연은 기대감이 적은 것은 사실이었다. 7만여 석이 넘는 얼리전트를 채울 수나 있을까… 지레 걱정이 되기도 했다. 로컬 한인들의 움직임도 그닥 크지 않았다. JYP 엔터테인먼트 측으로부터 프레스 초청을 받았지만, 다양한 취재를 위해 실제로 티켓 몇 장을 더 구매했다. 공연 막바지가 되면 티켓 값이 보통 떨어지기도 하는데, 시간이 다가올수록 오히려 더 오르고 있었다. 공연 당일 뚜껑을 열어 보니 어메이징~~ 그 자체였다.

공연 당일 오후 5시. 스트립에서 얼리전트로 향하는 길목은 거의 차단되었다. 만델레이 호텔과 룩소에서 얼리전트로 건너오는 다리에는 사람들의 행렬이 마치 엑소더스를 방불케 했다. 우버마저 타기 어려운 상황에서 모두들 도보로 걸어서 스타디움에 들어섰다.
입구에는 그야말로 ‘장사진’. 트와이스 소녀 코스튬을 장착한 여성 관객들이 줄을 이었다. 남자 관객들은 야구복에 트와이스 멤버 이름이 쓰여져 있는 굿즈 차림이 많았다. 베가스에서는 자주 보던 풍경이지만 트와이스의 인기는 상상을 휠씬 웃도는 수준이었다.

결국 자리를 이탈해 중간 로비에 서서 공연을 감상했다. 이들이 왜 이토록 K-POP에 열광하는가를 곱씹으며 스타디움 전체를 별처럼 하나가득 매운 반짝이는 라이트의 흔들림을 경이롭게 바라보았다. 규모로 세계 2위를 차지하는 얼리전트 스타디움을 평정했다면, 그것은 트와이스가 이미 세계의 정점을 찍었다는 것을 의미할 것이다. 한껏 성숙해진 트와이스의 성공이 자랑스러웠고, 대형 무대에서도 빛나던 리드 보컬 ‘지효’의 프로다움이 인상 깊었다.
