디스플레이계의 세계 최고를 달리고 있는 토비스(TOVIS)의 지사가 라스베이거스에 자리하고 있다. 토비스는 카지노 및 키오스크 등의 산업디스플레이와 휴대폰/태블릿/전장용 네비게이션 등의 소형 TFT-LCD 모듈을 생산 판매하는 기업이다. 리노에서 2019년 베가스로 옮긴 토비스는 카지노 슬롯머신의 모니터를 공급한다.
제임스 김(김정수) 현지 법인장을 만나 인터뷰를 진행해본다.
Q: 한국 기업의 지사가 베가스에 있어서 매우 반갑다. 언제부터 지사가 설립되었나.
A: 저는 처음 대우전자 주재원으로 2003년에 뉴저지로 왔습니다. 여기서 5~6년 정도 근무하다가 2009년 지금의 토비스 회사로 이직을 했죠. 토비스는 베가스가 아니라 리노에서 먼저 시작했습니다. 2019년에 드디어 라스베이거스로 입성하게 되었습니다.

한국 본사에서 제품 개발, 품질 관리, 세일즈 등이 이루어지고, 여기서는 대형 물류센터를 보유하고 제품 보관과 판매를 하고 있습니다.
Q: 베가스에는 카지노가 많아서 판매량이 많은가.
A: 저희 회사가 디스플레이 공급의 80%를 차지하고 있습니다. 주로 슬롯머신의 모니터에 쓰이죠. 또한 머신의 데스크의 트랜드에 따라 터치나 진화된 방식의 데스크도 공급합니다. 이 분야는 저희가 단연 1위입니다. 슬롯머신의 트랜드가 바뀌면 바뀔수록 저희에게 유리하죠. 현재는 곡면 디스플레이(Curved Display)가 대세라서 더 입체적인 화면을 만들어냅니다. 저희 회사에서는 다양한 곡면 구현이 가능하기 때문에 고객의 요청에 따라 제작이 가능합니다.
슬롯머신의 자판이라고 할 수 있는 데스크의 수요도 늘어납니다. 세계 최초로 디지털 버튼 데크를 개발해서 이미 출시되었습니다.
Q: 슬롯머신은 한 번 설치하면 재구매가 더디지 않나.
A: 베가스는 그렇지 않습니다. 워낙 관광객이 많이 사용하고, 24시간 운영되기 때문에 교체 주기가 매우 빠릅니다. 더군다나 실내의 공기가 탁하고, 정전기 발생도 수명 단축의 원인이 됩니다. 트렌드가 자주 바뀌는 것도 저희 회사 성장에 한 몫을 합니다. 저희 토비스의 기술력은 워낙 정평이 나 있기 때문에 어떠한 형태이든지 주문 제작이 가능한 것도 큰 매력으로 꼽힙니다.
Q: 토비스의 디스플레이는 카지노에만 적용되나.
A: 우리의 디스플레이는 매우 다양하게 적용됩니다. 키오스크 제품도 출시되므로 상당수의 레스토랑에도 공급되죠. 병원의 메디컬 부문에도 진출했습니다. 카드 단말기인 POS의 수요도 많습니다. 최근 수요가 대폭 늘어난 분야는 바로 자동차 디스플레이입니다. 한해 매출이 4~5억 달러에 이릅니다. 처음에는 베가스에 작은 지사로 시작했지만 앞으로는 헤드코트가 되어 세계로 나가는 전진 기지로서의 역할을 하게 될 것입니다.
한국 본사에서는 충남 서천에 차량용 디스플레이 신규 공장을 세우고 공급 확대했습니다. 중국 다롄에도 차량용 디스플레이 공장이 있습니다. 다롄 공장 생산 능력은 3,000억 수준입니다.
Q: 생각보다 토비스의 확장 가능성이 매우 높다. 앞으로의 계획은.
A: 개인적으로 베가스에서의 생활에 매우 만족합니다. 산도 많고 사막이라는 특이한 지형이어서 돌아볼 곳도 많고 트레킹도 즐길 수 있죠. 특히 골프장 시설이 워낙 잘 되어있어서 여가 활용에도 만족스럽습니다. 스트립의 장점은 말할 것도 없죠. 자연과 도시의 기능이 잘 발달되어 있기 때문에 앞으로 베가스에서 뿌리를 내리며, 전진기지로서의 역할에 힘쓸 것입니다. 저희 회사와는 매우 잘 맞는 특화 지역이기 때문에 탁월한 기술력을 앞세워 경쟁력에서 수위를 놓치지 않을 것입니다.
바람이 있다면 베가스 내의 한인 기업들이 잘 알려져 있지 않은데, 앞으로는 한인 커뮤니티에도 잘 알려져서 다각적인 교류가 이뤄지면 좋겠습니다. 베가스 시장은 앞으로도 무궁무진하다고 전망합니다. 한국의 독보적인 기술력으로 다양한 시장을 공략해 나갈 수 있도록 노력하겠습니다.

Q: It is very nice to have a branch office of a Korean company in Vegas. When was the branch office established.
A: I first came to New Jersey in 2003 as an expatriate employee of Daewoo Electronics. I worked here for 5-6 years and then moved to the current Tobis company in 2009. Tobis started in Reno, not Vegas. We finally moved to Las Vegas in 2019.
The main job is to supply the display of the casino slot machine.
Product development, quality management, and sales are carried out at the Korean headquarters, and here we have a large distribution center and store and sell products.
Q: Are there a lot of casinos in Vegas that sell a lot.
A: Our company accounts for 80 percent of the display supply. It is mainly used for monitoring slot machines. It also provides a desk in a touch or an evolved way, depending on the trend of the machine's desk. We are definitely No. 1 in this field. The more the trend of slot machines changes, the more favorable it is for us. Curved displays are the trend now, so they create more stereoscopic screens. We can implement various curved surfaces, so we can make them at the request of our customers.
The demand for desks, which can be called the keyboard of slot machines, is also increasing. The world's first digital button deck has already been developed and released.
Q: Isn't it slow to repurchase slot machines once they are installed.
A: That's not true with Vegas. It's used by a lot of tourists and it's open 24 hours a day, so the replacement cycle is very fast. Moreover, the indoor air is murky, and the generation of static electricity is also responsible for shortening the lifespan. The frequent changes in trends also contribute to our company's growth. Our Tobis' technology is so well known that it is possible to customize it in any form.
Q: Is Tobis' display only applicable to casinos.
A: Our displays have a wide variety of applications. Kiosk products will also be released, so they are also supplied to a large number of restaurants. It has also entered the medical sector of the hospital. There is also a high demand for POS, a card terminal. Recently, the demand has increased significantly in automobile displays. Sales amount to $400 million to $500 million a year. At first, it started as a small branch in Vegas, but from now on, it will become a headcoat and serve as a forward base for the world.
The Korean headquarters established a new vehicle display factory in Seocheon, Chungcheongnam-do, and expanded the supply. There is also a vehicle display factory in Dalian, China. The production capacity of the Dalian factory is 300 billion won.
Q: Tobis's expansion is more likely than I thought. What are your plans for the future.
A: Personally, I am very satisfied with my life in Vegas. There are many mountains and the desert is a unique terrain, so there are many places to look around and enjoy trekking. Especially, the golf course facilities are so well established that I am satisfied with the leisure activities. Needless to say, the benefits of the strip. Since nature and the city are well developed, we will take root in Vegas and strive to be a forward base. As it is a specialized area that fits well with our company, we will not miss the top spot in our competitiveness with our outstanding technology.
If there is a wind, Korean companies in Vegas are not well known, but I hope they will be well known to the Korean community in the future and have multilateral exchanges. I predict that the Vegas market will continue to be endless. I will do my best to target various markets with Korea's unique technology.
