‘Las Vegas Global Methodist Church’
미국 교단에서의 동성애 이슈 파장은 작지 않다. 미국연합감리교회(UMC) 총회에서도 ‘동성애자의 성직안수 금지 규정’을 삭제하는 결정을 내렸다. 아울러 동성애자의 결혼도 인정했다. UMC의 이러한 논란으로 2022년 대안 단체로 출범한 세계감리회(GMC)는 교단의 강력한 신앙적 기초를 수호하기로 입장을 밝혔다. UMC의 입장에 반발하여 최근까지 7,000여 곳의 교회가 교단을 떠났다.
이번 10월 서머린에서 새로이 창립예배를 드리는 ‘라스베가스글로벌감리교회’는 동성애를 반대하는 GMC 교단 소속이다. 기존 베가스 내의 감리교회 교인들이 뿔뿔이 흩어졌다가 다시 모였다. 동성애를 반대하고 전통적인 기독교적 신앙관을 지키려는 신도들의 노력이 새로운 보금자리를 만들어냈다. 글로벌 감리교회의 강성화 권사는 “동성애 통과 발표 후 저희는 교회를 나왔습니다. 그동안 하나님의 말씀에 순종하던 어르신들의 신앙생활이 기뻐보이지 않았어요. 저는 사명감을 가지고 그 분들의 마지막 순수한 예배를 지켜드리고 싶었습니다.”라며 이전 상황을 진중하게 설명했다.
함께 뜻을 모은 교인들이 새로운 둥지를 마련하기 위해 가장 먼저 애쓴 것은 목사님 청빙. 정성 들여 교단 앞으로 편지를 띄웠다. 감리교는 지금도 교단에서 성직자를 파송하는 형태를 고수하고 있다. 어려운 난관 끝에 목사님이 파송되었다. 감동적인 것은 청빙된 목사님이 바로 예전에 이들을 신앙으로 이끌었던 감리교 담임목사인 ‘최영완’ 목사다.
2019년에 겨자씨한알교회를 개척했던 최영완 목사는 UNLV 호텔경영학과 출신으로 캠퍼스 사역에서 뛰어난 은사를 보였다. 그 때 전도된 학생들이 교회의 주축을 이루었다. 최 목사 특유의 밝음으로 커나가던 교회를 뒤로하고, 신학 공부를 마치기 위해 떠났다. 이후 최 목사의 좌충우돌 과정이 시작되었다. 신앙에 있어서는 타협을 모르던 그는 교단의 권유로 클레어몬트 신학교에 들어갔지만 다원주의적 학교 성향을 받아들일 수 없어 중도 포기하고, 듀크대로 옮겼다. 학교를 마치고 사역하던 중에 동성애자 이슈로 반기를 들고 교단에서 제명되었다. 그리고 지난해에 GMC로 이적했다.
인터뷰하는 내내 최 목사는 너무도 밝은 인상이라서 화를 내신 적이 있냐고 물었다. 교리와 신앙적 행동에 있어서만큼은 다혈질일 정도로 텐션을 높인다는 답이 돌아왔다. 솔직히 말해서 정말 신앙적으로 매력이 넘치는 목사다. 노방 전도를 서슴지 않고, 말씀에 어긋나면 절대 타협하지 않고, 초창기부터 직접 학생들에게 밥을 지어 먹였기 때문에 지금도 주방에 들어가는 것을 주저하지 않는다. 사역을 하면서도 어떠한 노동도 마다하지 않아서 가졌던 직업이 셀 수 없을 정도이다. 그리고 그는 청빈하다. 요즘 세상에 드문 사역자이기도 하고, 앞으로 타락한 현실 속에서 구현해야할 성직자 상이기도 하다. 교인들이 뚝심을 가지고 청빙할 만한 사역자라 느껴졌다. 매우 반가웠다. 최 목사는 “저는 어릴 때부터 대통령이 꿈이었어요. 그런데 목사가 되었어요. 공동체를 섬기고 다스리는 일은 마찬가지라, 꿈을 이루었다고 생각합니다.”라며 맑게 웃었다.
라스베가스글로벌감리교회는 철저히 분화된 시스템으로 출발한다. 설교와 교리에 대한 가르침은 사역자의 담당이고, 행정 업무는 평신도 담당이다. 그리고 예배 부서에서 모든 행사를 관장하며 자율적으로 진행된다. 그들은 말한다. “큰 교회가 목적은 아닙니다. 사람이 모이면 썩게 되어있기 때문에 진정한 크리스천으로 양육되어지는 교회가 목표입니다. 헌금도 선교와 봉사로 계속 흘려보낼 것입니다. 상처받은 심령이 치유를 받는 교회가 되기를 소망합니다.”

The impact of homosexuality issues in U.S. denominations is not small. The U.S. General Assembly of the United Methodist Church (UMC) also decided to remove the regulation prohibiting the ordination of homosexuals. It also recognized marriage of homosexuals. The World Methodist Church (GMC), which was launched as an alternative organization in 2022 due to the UMC's controversy, has expressed its position to protect the religious foundation of the denomination. In protest of the UMC's stance, more than 7,000 churches have left the denomination until recently.
The Las Vegas Global Methodist Church, which will offer its new foundation service in Summerlin this October, is a member of the GMC order that opposes homosexuality. Members of the existing Methodist Church in Vegas dispersed and gathered again. The efforts of believers to oppose homosexuality and preserve traditional Christian beliefs have created a new home. Kang Seong-hwa, of the Global Methodist Church, said, "We left the church after the announcement of the passage of homosexuality. The religious life of the senior who obeyed the word of God did not seem happy. I wanted to protect their last pure service with a sense of mission."
The first thing that the church members who agreed with each other struggled to establish a new nest was the pastor's invitation. The Methodist Church still sticks to the form of sending pastor from the church. After difficulties, the pastor was sent. What is touching is Pastor Choi Young-wan, who is the pastor in charge of Methodist who once led them to faith.
Pastor Choi Young-wan, who pioneered the Mustard Seed Hanal Church in 2019, was a graduate of UNLV Hotel Management and showed excellent gifts in his campus ministry. At that time, the evangelized students became the mainstay of the church. He left the church, which had grown with Pastor Choi's unique brightness, to complete his theology studies. After that, Pastor Choi's a journey of tribulation began. Knowing no compromise in faith, he entered Claremont Seminary at the recommendation of the church, but he gave up and moved to Duke University because he could not accept the pluralistic school orientation. While serving after school, he rebelled against gay issues and was expelled from the church. Then, last year, he moved to GMC.
During the interview, Pastor Choi had such a bright expression throughout the interview that the reporter asked if he had ever gotten angry. The answer was that he raised his tension to the point of having a hot temper when it comes to doctrines and religious behavior. To be honest, he is a religiously attractive pastor. He does not hesitate to go to the streets, never compromise if he violates the words, and even now he does not hesitate to enter the kitchen because he has been cooking and feeding the students himself since the beginning. I can't count the jobs I had because I didn't hesitate to do any work while serving. And he is poor. He is also a rare minister in the world these days, and he is also a priest who must be realized in the reality of depravity in the future. I felt that the church members were a minister worthy of a warmheartedness. It was very nice to meet them. Pastor Choi said, "I have dreamed of becoming the president since I was young. But I became a pastor. I think I have achieved my dream because serving and governing the community is the same."
The Las Vegas Global Methodist Church starts out with a thoroughly differentiated system. The ministry oversees preaching and teaching doctrines, and the administrative affairs are also in charge of laypeople. And the worship department oversees all events and is conducted autonomously. They say, "The purpose is not to have a large church. The goal is to have a church that is nurtured as a true Christian because it is meant to rot when people gather. Donations will also continue to flow through missions and volunteering. I hope that a broken spirit will become a church that receives healing."
