"Jajangmyeon Man" with a unique history
베가스의 가장 대표적인 중식당 하면? 바로 ‘유샹’(YuXiang). 이 곳의 스티븐 임(임기호) 대표를 만났다.
검은 티셔츠에 검은 바지 그리고 힙합스타일의 검정 모자… 그 모자에는 특이하게도 ‘UFC’란 글자가 쓰여 있었다. “UFC 팬이신가봐요?”라는 물음에 “아!... 제가 격투기 전문 에이전시 매니저예요.”라는 뜻밖의 대답이 돌아왔다. “매주 시합을 볼 정도로 열광적인 팬으로 시작했는데, 한국 격투기 선수들이 베가스에 왔을 때 통역도 해주고 초대해서 음식도 나누다보니 한국 에이전트로 오퍼가 들어왔어요. IRIDIUM 격투기 전문 에이전시에서 매니저로 일하게 되었죠. 소속 선수는 300명 정도이고 유명한 선수들도 20명 정도 됩니다. 지금은 은퇴한 정찬성 선수가 소속된 에이전시이기도 하죠.”
정말 독특한 이력이다. 그는 베가스에서 그 흔한 골프도 하지 않는다. 취미라고는 오직 격투기뿐이라고 한다. 7월20일에 최두호 선수의 격투기 시합이 있었다. 오래간만에 승리의 쾌거를 이룬 경기였다. 임 대표는 “8년 만에 UFC에서 승리를 해서 너무 자랑스러웠어요. ‘클래스는 살아있다였어요.’ 최두호 선수가 침착하고 베테랑이어서 그런지 게임 운영이 너무 좋았습니다.”라고 소감을 말했다.
임 대표에게 격투기 매니저 일은 매우 매력적이라고 한다. 싱가폴, 일본, 사우디 아라비아 등 세계 여러 나라를 방문하기도 하고, 특히 한국의 꿈나무들을 미국 UFC에 연결하는 데에 힘쓰고 있다.
임 대표의 이민기는 30년을 넘어간다. 어린 나이에 왔는데도 한국어에 익숙하다. 뉴욕에서 오랫동안 살다가, 드라마 ‘올인’의 영향으로 UNLV에 입학했다. 그는 “주로 카지노에 관련된 수업을 많이 들었어요. 첫 직장을 카지노 딜러로 시작했어요. 3~4년 동안 하루에 16시간씩 일했습니다. 정말 열심히 살았습니다.”라고 회상했다.
지인의 권유로 중식당 ‘유샹’을 시작했다. 가장 큰 난관은 주방일이었다. 주방장이 그만두는 바람에 직접 요리를 해야했다. 유튜브를 보며 연습하고, 직원에게 배우기도 했다. 지금은 혼자 다 할 수 있을 만큼 기술자가 되었다. “정말 고생 많이 했어요. 7년만에 처음으로 휴가를 갔을 정도예요. 한국 음식을 베가스에 더 알리고 싶어서 분식점도 이번에 오픈했습니다. 저는 재능은 뛰어나지 않지만 열심히 노력하는 것은 자신 있습니다.” 임 대표는 미니 마트, 테일러 정육점, 반찬 가게 등 사업 확장에도 주력하고 있다. 주로 한인들을 상대로 영업을 하기 때문에 한인들에게 감사하는 마음도 잊지 않는다. “기회가 닿는다면 한인회를 통해서도 한인 커뮤니티에 도움이 되는 일을 하고 싶습니다. 저는 그래도 젊은 나이에 꿈을 이뤘어요. 이제부터는 안정화에 주력할 예정입니다. 격투기는 헝그리 정신이 강한 스포츠여서 더 정이 갑니다. 계속해서 어려운 선수들을 돕는 역할을 꾸준히 하고 싶습니다.” 임 대표의 열심히 사는 그만의 라이프를 들어볼 수 있어서 반가웠다. 자신이 좋아하는 취미를 일로 승화시키는 순발력도 흥미롭다. 그를 통해 한국적인 뿌리가 더 뻗어나가길 희망해 본다.

Black T-shirt, black pants, and hip-hop style black hat... The hat was unusually written with the words "UFC." To the question, "You must be a fan of UFC?" the unexpected answer was "Ah!… I'm the manager of an agency specializing in martial arts." "I started out as a huge fan who watched matches every week, but when Korean fighters came to Vegas, I translated and invited them to eat, so I got an offer as a Korean agent. I ended up working as a manager at an IRIDIUM martial arts agency. It has about 300 players and about 20 famous players. It's also the agency that retired Chung Chan-sung now belongs to."
What a unique resume. He doesn't even play that common golf in Vegas. His only hobby is playing martial arts. On July 20, Choi Du-ho had a martial arts competition. It was a triumphant fight after a long time. Lim said, "I was so proud to win the UFC in eight years. The class was alive." Choi was calm and veteran, so the game management was great."
Lim said that working as a martial arts manager is very attractive. He also visited many countries around the world, including Singapore, Japan, and Saudi Arabia, and is striving to connect Korean dreamers to the UFC in the United States.
Lim's life spanned more than 30 years. Even though he came to Korea at an early age, he is still familiar with Korean. After living in New York for a long time, he got accepted into UNLV due to the influence of the drama All In. He recalled, "I took a lot of classes, mostly related to casinos. I started my first job as a casino dealer. I worked 16 hours a day for three to four years. I really worked hard."
I started a Chinese restaurant called "Yu Xiang" at the recommendation of an acquaintance. The biggest challenge was working in the kitchen. As the chef quit, I had to cook for myself. I watched YouTube and practiced, and learned from the staff. Now I am a technician who can do everything by myself. "I’ve worked really hard. It was my first vacation in seven years. I wanted to promote Korean food to Vegas, so I opened a snack bar. I am not talented, but I am confident in trying hard." Lim is also focusing on expanding his businesses such as mini marts, Taylor butcher shops, and side dish shops. He also never forgets to thank Koreans because he mainly deals with Koreans. "If I have a chance, I would like to do something that helps the Korean community through the Korean Association as well. But I achieved my dream at a young age. From now on, I will focus on stabilizing it. I am more attached to martial arts because it is a sport with a strong Hungry spirit. I want to continue to play a role that helps players in need." It was nice to hear about Lim's hard-working life. His quickness to sublimate his favorite hobbies into work is also interesting. I hope that Korean roots will spread further through him.
