Scholar Park Woo Yong... His name is the epitome of technology management
박우용 교수… 그가 자신의 학문을 통해 성공했다는 것은 한국에서 UNLV 교수로 청빙 되었다는 것만으로도 증명이 된다. 그는 자신의 학문을 설명하는 데 있어서 탁월한 달변가이다. 거침이 없고 정교하다. 그러나 지나온 삶의 여정을 설명하는 대목에서는 짠~한 느낌이 진동한다.
박 교수는 2001년 홀로 유학길에 올라 미시간대 산업공학과에서 박사 학위를 취득했다. 처음 1년을 제외하고는 전액 장학금으로 학위를 마쳤다. 하지만 1년 동안은 며칠 동안 밥을 굶을 정도로 어려운 시간을 보냈으며 3년간 3시간 반만 자야만 했다.
이후 플로리다 국제대학교 산업시스템 공학과에서 조교수로 재직 했으나 학교 예산 문제로 학과가 폐쇄되었다. “할 수 없이 한국으로 돌아갔어요. SK에서 근무하게 되었는데, 밤의 술문화를 견딜 수가 없었죠. 다시 학교로 돌아갔습니다. 경북대학교 경영대학 초빙교수를 거쳐, 중앙대학교에서 재직했습니다. 2015년에 홍콩 폴리테크닉 대학교에 조교수로 부임해서 5년 동안 조교수로 있었습니다. 하필 이 때 홍콩 민주화 사태가 일어나는 바람에 모든 것이 불안정했죠. 고민 끝에 미국으로 다시 돌아왔습니다. 제가 쓴 논문들이 크게 인정 받아 150:1의 경쟁률을 뚫고 부임하게 되었습니다.” 박 교수는 참 씩씩하다. 자신의 우여곡절이 깃든 과거사를 경쾌하게 전해준다. 그리고 더욱 단단한 표정으로 그의 이야기는 현재와 미래로 넘어간다.
박교수는 ‘기술 경영’ 부문에서 탁월한 전문가이다.
“기술 경영은 기술 자체를 다루기보다는 기술 변화에 따른 기업의 적절한 구조/전략의 적합성을 찾는 것을 말합니다. 핸드폰 하나에도 기술 경영의 원리가 작용합니다. 예전에는 전화의 기능만을 담당했지만, 현재는 스마트폰이라는 기술이 세상을 지배하죠. 인터넷 네크워크가 주기능입니다. 지속적인 기술의 진화가 이루어질 때 시장에서 기업이 살아남기 위해 조직적인 전략의 변화가 필요하죠. 기술 경영은 최대한 효율적으로 전략을 사용 방법을 다루는 학문입니다.”
그는 이 분야의 논문에서도 매우 인정 받는 학자이다.
“2020년 SMS 연차 학술대회에서 최우수 논문상을 받았습니다. ‘혁신 충격에 대응한 전략적 재배치와 생존’이라는 주제로 주목을 받았습니다. 2011과 2006년에도 최우수 논문상에 올랐습니다. 저의 가장 대표적인 논문은 2021년에 발표한 ‘건축 혁신 라이프 사이클 전반에 걸친 소싱 선택 시퀀스의 성능 및 생존 효과’입니다.이 논문은 기술이 지속적으로 변화할때 전략의 순서를 잘 지키는 기업이 가장 생존력이 강하다는 연구입니다. 즉 아웃소싱과 자체 개발을 적절히 잘 운영할 때 기업의 생명력은 극대화됩니다. 미국이 현재 어려움에 직면한 것도 아웃소싱이 만연하기 때문입니다.
박교수는 자신의 학문을 달변으로 풀어내는 탁월한 연사이다.
한국에 있을 때 많은 강연을 다녔습니다. 기업의 간부들이 주 대상이었죠. 주로 1박2일 동안 릴레이로 강연을 했습니다. 제가 마르고 얼굴이 하얀 편이라, 처음엔 강한 인상을 주지 못하지만 강연을 시작하면 시장에 관한 저의 해박한 논리에 깊은 감명을 받았다고 전해듣곤 했습니다. 청중을 향한 자신감!… 제 열강이 인정받는 비결입니다.
그는 베가스가 향후 메트로폴리탄이 될 것으로 전망한다.
메트로폴리스가 되려면 인구, 교육, 고용… 이 세 가지가 충족돼야 합니다. 이미 베가스의 인구는 급속도로 증가하고 있습니다. 중심이 되는 UNLV가 많은 투자와 혁신을 하고 있고, 초중고의 수준도 많이 나아졌다고 봅니다. 제가 가장 중요하게 생각하는 건 바로 ‘고용’입니다. 베가스의 주된 산업인 서비스업은 경제적 스케일이 크다고 할 수는 없습니다. 기대를 걸만한 상황은 제조업체들이 베가스로 전진한다는 것입니다. 이건 매우 고무적인 일로 고용 뿐만 아니라, 공급망까지 확장되기 때문에 규모가 매우 커집니다. 메트로폴리탄으로 가는 수순을 이미 밟고 있다고 볼 수 있습니다.
박교수의 미래적 계획은 ‘실속이 있는 산업정책’ 구현
제가 가장 듣고 싶은 말은 ‘기술 경영의 대명사’라는 제2의 이름입니다. 미국은 제조업을 등한시하면서 어려움을 겪고 있고 기술 경영에 단 철학도 퇴색해가고 있습니다. 한국이나 아시아는 기술 경영이 매우 중요한 학문으로 여겨지고 있습니다. 기회가 된다면 축적된 저의 학문을 실현시킬 수 있는 정부 정책에 참여하고 싶습니다. 실속이 있는 산업정책을 구현하여 나라 경제 발전에 기여하는 것을 꿈꿉니다. 반복해서 말하지만, 하드웨어와 소프트웨어가 적절히 잘 융화가 되어야 미래의 경제는 생명력이 살아날 수 있습니다.
자신이 일군 학문에 대한 자부심, 그리고 한국인으로서 미국 대학의 중심으로 발돋움하는 그의 포부가 자랑스럽게 열매 맺기를 응원한다.

Professor Park Woo-yong... The mere fact that he was invited as a UNLV professor in Korea proves that he succeeded through his studies. He is an excellent speaker at explaining his studies. He is relentless and sophisticated. However, a salty feeling vibrates in the passage that explains the past journey of life.
In 2001, Park studied alone and obtained a doctorate from the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Michigan. Except for the first year, he completed his degree with full scholarships. However, he had such a hard time that he had to skip meals for several days and had to sleep only three and a half hours for three years.
He later worked as an assistant professor at Florida International University's Industrial Systems Engineering department, but his department was shut down due to budget issues. "I had no choice but to go back to Korea. I got to work at SK, and I couldn't stand the night drinking culture. Then I went back to school. After working as a visiting professor at Kyungpook National University's business school, I worked at Chung-Ang University. In 2015, he was appointed as an assistant professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and worked as an assistant professor for five years. Then, everything was unstable because of the democratization in Hong Kong. After a long thought, I came back to the U.S. after thinking about it. My dissertations were so recognized that I was assigned to the post through a 150:1 competition ratio." Professor Park is brave. He gives a cheerful message about his past experiences with twists and turns. And with a firmer facial expression, his story moves into the present and the future.
Professor Park is an excellent expert in the field of "technical management."
"Technology management is about finding the suitability of a company's appropriate structure/strategy in response to technology changes rather than dealing with technology itself. A single phone also has the principles of technology management. It used to be just the phone, but now the technology called smartphones dominate the world. Internet networks are the main function. Continuous technological evolution requires organizational strategies to change in order for companies to survive in the market. Technology management is the study of how to use strategies as efficiently as possible."
He is a highly recognized scholar in papers in this field.
"2020 SMS Annual Conference won Best Paper Award. It received attention with the theme of 'Strategic Relocation and Survival in Response to Innovation Shock'. It was also awarded Best Paper in 2011 and 2006. My most representative paper is 'Performance and Survival Effects of Sourcing Selection Sequences Across the Architectural Innovation Life Cycle' published in 2021. This paper is a study that shows that companies that follow the order of strategies well when technology is constantly changing are the most viable. In other words, when outsourcing and self-development are properly and well operated, the vitality of a company is maximized. The U.S. is currently facing difficulties because outsourcing is prevalent.
Professor Park is an excellent speaker who eloquently solves his studies.
When I was in Korea, I attended many lectures. The main event was corporate executives. I gave lectures in relay for 2 days and 1 night. I was skinny and fair-skinned, so I couldn't give a strong impression at first, but I used to hear that I was deeply impressed by my extensive logic about markets. Confidence in the audience!… My powers are the secret to being recognized.
He predicts that Vegas will become the Met in the future.
To become a metropolis, population, education, employment... There are three things that need to be done. The population of Vegas is already growing rapidly. I think the central UNLV is making a lot of investments and innovations, and the level of elementary, middle, and high school has improved a lot. My most important thing is employment. The service industry, which is the main industry in Vegas, is not necessarily on a large scale. The promising situation is that manufacturers are moving forward to Vegas. This is very encouraging, and it's getting very large because it extends not only to employment, but also to the supply chain. You can see that we're already on the way to the Met.
Professor Park's future plan is to implement a "substantial industrial policy."
What I want to hear most is my second name, "the epitome of technology management." The U.S. is experiencing difficulties while neglecting manufacturing, and its monophilosophy in technology management is fading. In Korea and Asia, technology management is considered a very important discipline. If I have the opportunity, I would like to participate in government policies that will enable me to realize my accumulated studies. I dream of contributing to the development of the country's economy by implementing substantial industrial policies. Again, only when hardware and software are properly harmonized can the economy of the future be revived.
I cheer for his pride in his studies and his ambition to become the center of American universities as a Korean to bear fruit with pride.
