Increasing number of car theft incidents… The police are helpless
엔터프라이즈, 서머린 등 안전지대에도 급증
올해 3개월 안에 벌써 1,705대 넘어서
# 지난 5월, 서머린에 거주하는 김윤기씨는 집 앞에 세워둔 차가 크게 파손됐다. 차를 훔치려는 일당이 키 박스를 뜯어내다가 시동이 걸리지 않자, 차 유리창을 모두 깨고 달아났다. 차 안의 귀중품도 도난당했다. 신고를 받고 출동한 경찰의 답변은 아주 간단했다. 아무 조치도 해줄 것이 없다는 것. 최근 한 달 동안 서머린에서만 300대가 넘게 도난당했으니 일상적으로 여기라는 말만 남기고 돌아갔다.
# Southwest에 거주하는 박혜영씨는 역시 집 앞에 세워둔 차량이 감쪽같이 사라졌다. 이틀이 지난 후에 경찰의 연락을 받고 차를 찾은 곳은 North 라스베이거스. 차량의 앞부분이 크게 파손된 채로 발견됐다.
#플라밍고 길에 거주하는 김효영씨 역시 한밤 중에 차량이 사라졌다. 파라다이스 근처에서 발견된 그의 차량은 문짝부터 대다수의 부품들이 뜯겨져 나간 상태였다.
지난 해에 이어 올해에도 차량 도난 사고는 줄을 잇는다. 특히 기아나 현대차가 상당수를 차지한다. 지난해 3,972건, 올해 3,242건으로 경찰은 차량 도난이 크게 감소했다고 밝히고 있지만, 올해 3개월 동안 이미 1,705대를 넘어서고 있기에 다시 늘어나는 추세여서 주변에서의 피해 상황은 끊이질 않고 있다. 두 번, 세 번에 걸쳐 도난이나 파손되는 차량도 적지 않다.
현대와 기아차를 훔치는 소셜 미디어 문제로 인해 도난 사건이 급증했다. 현재 현대자동차는 210만 달러의 배상에 합의했고, 기아차는 185만 달러를 배상하라는 판결을 받았다. 문제가 되고 있는 2022년형 미만의 현대차들은 보험에 가입조차 못하거나 높은 보험료를 감수해야 하는 사례도 빈번하다. 네바다 보험 위원회에서는 “차량 도난은 차량 보험료 인상에 크게 기여한다. State Farm, All State등 일부 보험사는 특정 현대 및 기아 차량에 대해 보험 가입을 중단시켰다.”고 밝혔다.
메트로 경찰은 최근 1,000대 이상의 현대차에 도난 방지 소프트웨어를 제공하는 이벤트를 개최했다. 현대자동차는 소프트웨어 업데이트와 도난 방지 장치를 제공했는데, 이러한 노력이 차량 도난 수치를 줄이는데 크게 기여했다고 발표했다. LVMPD 통계에 따르면 컨벤션 센터 부근에서 54%가 감소했고, 다운타운은 27%, 중남부 지역은 22%, 스프링 밸리는 8%가 감소했다. 그러나 북서부 지역은 20% 증가했고, 엔터프라이즈 지역은 15% 증가했다. 서머린 지역에서는 자동차 절도 사고가 6% 증가했다.
메트로 경찰 보안관인 케빈 맥마힐(Kevin McMahill)은 “이렇게 증가하는 차량 도난 사고는 경찰로서는 매우 자랑스럽지 않은 일이다. 치밀하게 대처할 수 없어서 사실상 실패라고 시인할 수밖에 없다.”고 토로했다. 올해 3월말 들어서만 신고된 도난 차량이 1,705대를 넘어가고 있다. 헨더슨에서도 도난 사고는 급증했다. 도난 차량 1,245대 중 현대차는 353대, 기아차는 216대를 차지했다.
버젯 오토 바디샵의 오너 존 리씨는 “차량 파손 및 절도 사고로 들어오는 차들이 급증했다. 가장 큰 문제는 베가스에서 너무 많은 사고가 일어나기 때문에 부품을 구하기가 어렵다. 당연히 수리가 지연되고, 이것은 부가 지출로 이어지기 때문에 난감한 상황들이 많다.”고 밝혔다.
베가스의 경우 매년 4천만 명이 넘는 관광객이 방문하기 때문에 차량 도난 사고에 더 취약하다. 메트로 경찰은 “운전자들이 주차 장소에 더 많은 주의를 기울여야 한다. 문이 잠겼는지 반드시 확인하고 차량에는 절대 귀중품을 두어서는 안 된다.”고 강조했다.

1)되도록 열쇠를 손에 들고 차에 접근한다. 차를 열기 전 항상 뒷자리를 확인한다.
2)길을 묻거나 전단지를 나눠주는 사람을 의심하라.
3)교차로에 정차해 있으면 반드시 주위를 둘러보라. 정차 시 앞차의 타이어가 보일 정도로 거리를 유지하며, 차량 강탈범의 접근이 쉽지 않도록 중앙 차선 쪽으로 운전하라.
4)주차 시 대형 밴이나 트럭 사이에 하지 말라.
5)등록 정보, 보험 정보, 집이나 직장 주소를 식별할 수 있는 정보를 글로브 박스나 자동차 내부에 남겨두지 말라.
6)무엇보다도, 단 한 순간이라도 어린이를 차 안에 혼자 남겨두지 말라!

Park Hye-young, who lives in #Southwest, said, "The car parked in front of the house disappeared. Two days later, after being contacted by the police, the front part of the car was found badly damaged.
Kim Hyo-young, who lives on #Flamingo Road, also disappeared in the middle of the night. His vehicle, which was found near Paradise, had most of the parts torn off from the door.
The number of car thefts continues this year following last year. In particular, Kia and Hyundai cars account for a significant portion. The police say that car theft has decreased significantly with 3,972 cases last year and 3,242 cases this year, but the number of cars has already exceeded 1,705 in the three months of this year, so the damage around them has not stopped. The social media issues of stealing Hyundai and Kia have led to a surge in theft cases. Metro Police recently held an event to provide anti-theft software to more than 1,000 Hyundai cars. Hyundai Motor announced that its efforts have greatly contributed to reducing the number of vehicle thefts, with software updates and anti-theft devices. LVMPD statistics show that there was a 54 percent drop near convention centers, 27 percent drop in downtown, 22 percent drop in the south-central region, and 8 percent drop in Spring Valley. However, the Northwest region saw a 20 percent increase, and the Enterprise region saw a 15 percent increase. In the Summerlin region, car thefts increased by 6 percent.
Metro Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill said, "The growing number of car thefts is something that the police are not very proud of. We have no choice but to admit that it is actually a failure because we cannot handle it meticulously." As of the end of March this year alone, more than 1,705 reported stolen vehicles have been sold. The number of thefts has also soared in Henderson. Of the 1,245 stolen vehicles, Hyundai Motor Company accounted for 353 and Kia Motors Company 216.
John Lee, owner of Budget Auto Body Shop, said, "The number of cars coming in from car damage and theft has skyrocketed. The biggest problem is that parts are hard to come by because there are so many accidents in Vegas. There are a lot of difficulties because repairs are naturally delayed, which leads to additional spending."
Vegas is more vulnerable to car theft because more than 40 million tourists visit every year. Metro police stressed, "Drivers should pay more attention to parking areas. Make sure you lock the door and never leave any valuables in your vehicle."

1)As much as possible, approach the car with the key in hand. Always check the back seat before opening the car.
2)Suspect the person who asks for directions or gives out flyers.
3)If you are stopped at an intersection, be sure to look around. When you stop, keep your distance so that you can see the tires of the car in front of you, and drive toward the center lane to avoid easy access by car robbers.
4)Do not park between large vans or trucks.
5)Do not leave registration information, insurance information, or information that can identify your home or work address inside your glove box or car.
6)First of all, don't leave a child alone in the car for even one moment!
