도서관은 책에만 관련된 곳? No! 학생 자녀를 둔 부모라면 도서관에서 책에 관련된 업무 말고도 약간의 이벤트와 과외 등을 진행한다는 정도는 알고 있을 것이다. 그런데 요즘 도서관의 변신은 긍정적 의미의 ‘트렌스포머’와도 같다.
특히 가정 형편이 어려운 아이들을 돕기 위한 프로그램들을 갖추고 활발한 지원에 나서고 있다. 클라크 카운티 라이브러리 디스트릭의 마케팅 관리자인 리사 제이콥(Lisa Jacob)은 “현재 라이브러리 디스트릭에서는 어린이 및 청소년들의 복지를 위해 다방면으로 노력한다. 정부와 기업들의 지원을 받아 이미 충분한 재원을 확보하고 아이들을 위한 푸드 지원, 직업 교육, 교사 프로그램 등 아기부터 청소년, 가족까지 지원하는 프로그램을 시행하고 있다. 한인 커뮤니티에도 많이 홍보되어 도움이 되기를 바란다.”라고 설명했다.
이번 기획 이슈에서는 도서관에서 진행되는 도우미 프로그램에 대해 상세히 알아보고자 한다.
*아기와 부모를 위한 프로그램(Baby & Me)
이 사이트에서는 0~5세까지의 유아들과 부모가 상호 작용을 통해 건강한 두뇌 발달과 인지적, 사회적 성장을 촉진하기 위한 내용들을 담고 있다.
먼저 연령대와 정서에 맞게 책을 선택할 수 있고, 읽기, 배우기 등 카테고리를 정리해 놓았다. 부모를 위해 무료로 테라피 상담도 해준다. 저소득층의 경우 아기를 출산하거나 돌볼 때 재정적 지원이 필요하다면 이런 경우도 라이브러리 측에서 도네이션할 수 있는 기구를 연결시켜 준다. 출산용품 패키지도 지급한다.
도서관에서는 유아부터 어린이, 청소년에 이르기까지 다양한 문화를 체험하고, 어려운 상황에서는 신속하게 도움도 받을 수 있는 프로그램이 마련돼 있다.
*어린이를 위한 도우미 프로그램
도서관 교사 프로그램은 클라크 카운티 교육구에서 근무하는 교사 및 보조 교사로부터 숙제에 대한 도움과 과외 지도를 받을 수 있다. 오는 5월2일까지 월-목요일 오후 4시부터 6시까지 진행되며 예약은 하지 않아도 된다. 단, 반드시 해당 도서관에 등록해야 한다.

청소년들의 직업 교육을 위한 기술 시설들이 구비되어 있다. DJ 랩, 재봉 강습, 로봇 공학, 음악 및 사운드 제작, 팟캐스팅, 코딩 캠프가 그것. 이러한 학습을 통해 수익성 있는 직업과 취업을 향한 구체적 노력을 할 수 있게 해준다. 3D 프린터, 노트북, 카메라, 음악 소프트 웨어, 영화 제작을 위한 지원도 받을 수 있다.
라스베이거스에서 처음으로 청소년 지원센터인 EmployNV Youth Hub & Teen Zone이 West Charleston Library에 문을 열었다. 16-24세의 청소년과 청년들의 취업과 인턴십을 돕기 위해 전문 직업 코치도 배치한다.

노숙자 청소년을 위한 네바다 파트너십(Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth)과 협력하는 25개 주립 도서관(LVCCLD)들은 공식적으로 ‘세이프 플레이스’(safe Place)로 지정돼 있다. 위기에 처한 어린이와 청소년들은 누구든 도서관에 도움을 요청할 수 있다. 24시간 서비스와 지원을 제공한다. 보호소, 주택, 교육, 취업 지원, 아동 복지 및 추가 서비스를 연결해 준다.

One key aspect of this evolution is the Helper Program, a multifaceted approach to assist individuals of all ages. The program includes initiatives like Baby & Me, which focuses on promoting healthy brain development in infants through interactive sessions for children aged 0 to 5 and their parents. Additionally, the Library Teacher Program offers tutoring and homework help, while the Technical Research Institute for Youth provides vocational education opportunities in areas such as music production, coding, and robotics.
Notably, libraries are stepping up to address the needs of homeless youth, with 25 state libraries designated as "safe places" in collaboration with the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. Q: LV 도서관에는 한국 도서 섹션이 없는 것 같다. 한인들이 한국 책을 기증한다면 공간을 만들어줄 수 있는가. A: 당연히 만들 수 있다. 문화는 다양할수록 좋다. Windmill 도서관이 디스트릭 본부이기 때문에 중점적으로 의견을 수렴하도록 하겠다. A: Over the past two years, we have implemented innovative changes at the library. The expansion of the library's scope is a response to the impact of the digital age and changes in lifestyles brought about by COVID-19. As the traditional concept of libraries evolved beyond books to include cutting-edge technologies like computers and focused on vocational training programs such as sewing classes, we recognized the need for more advanced forms of learning in the global era. Additionally, with changes in housing patterns and economic challenges due to COVID-19, many families faced significant issues at home. Hence, the library has been actively working to bridge the gap by connecting resources with children in need. Q: How does the relief program work specifically? A: Our relief program includes a kids cafe that serves as a learning support hub and provides lunches for students using the library. We also engage in hydroponic cultivation to grow and distribute vegetables, and collaborate with Sunrise Hospital to provide maternity gift sets. Furthermore, we partner with various organizations to assist children and adolescents seeking help. Whenever someone seeks assistance at the library, we strive to connect them with relevant resources to address their needs promptly. Our staff is equipped to assist individuals who require support in languages other than English. Q: I don't believe the LV library has a Korean book section. If Korean books are donated, could you allocate space for them? A: Certainly, we welcome diverse cultural contributions. Since the Windmill Library serves as the District headquarters, we will prioritize gathering feedback to accommodate and showcase donated Korean books. |
