희생자가 줄어든 가운데, 불행히도 보행자 사망자는 올해 15%로 증가했고, 2023년에는 61명이 사망했다. 또한 ATV, 모페드, 스쿠터 등 다른 차량과 관련된 사망자도 올해 33% 증가했다. 반면에 오토바이와 자전거 운전자의 사망은 각각 24%와 22% 감소했다.
안전벨트를 착용하지 않아 사망한 경우는 2022년 61명에서 44명으로 줄어들었다. 국립고속도로안전위원회(National Highway and Safety Commission)는 네바다주에서 가장 치명적인 충돌 사고의 주요 원인은 과속과 음주 운전이라고 밝혔다.
미국교통부에서는 과속의 위험성에 대해 차량 통제력 상실, 탑승자 위험, 정지 거리의 증가, 충돌 심각성, 연료 비용 증가 등을 위험 요소로 꼽았다.

베가스는 유동 인구가 워낙 많기 때문에 지리에 익숙하지 않은 운전자들로 인해 교통사고의 위험은 언제나 도사리고 있다. 그래서 모든 전문가들은 방어적인 운전 관행이 무엇보다 중요하다고 입을 모은다.
무엇보다 과속을 하지 않는 것이 가장 중요하며, 안전벨트 착용 역시 중요하다. 국가안전위원회는 안전벨트를 착용하는 것만으로도 충돌 사고 시 부상 위험을 거의 50% 줄일 수 있다고 말한다.
베가스에서 특히 많이 일어나는 사고는 안전 거리 미확보로 인한 추돌 사고. 자신과 다른 운전자 사이의 안전한 차간 거리를 유지해야 한다. 미국 고속도로 안전청에서는 모든 교통 사고의 1/3이 이 경우에 속한다고 전한다. 특히 겨울이 올수록 차간 거리 유지는 필수적이다.

네바다 주 교통부(NDOT) 충돌 지도에 따르면 상당한 사망 사고와 60건 이상의 부상 사고가 발생했다.

Nevada witnessed a concerning surge in traffic fatalities during the year 2022, making it the deadliest year on record. In August 2023, a mediation report was released, revealing a distressing total of 416 deaths resulting from traffic accidents. Although this figure stands as the third-highest recorded, it signifies a slight improvement compared to the peak years of 2006 (432 deaths) and 2005 (427 deaths).
Encouragingly, the year 2023 saw a positive shift, with a decline in traffic fatalities, reaching a total of 250 cases. This marks a notable 7% decrease from the 268 cases reported in the first half of 2022. The majority of these fatalities appear to be concentrated in the southern region of Nevada, particularly Clark County.
Characteristics of Traffic Fatalities
While the overall number of victims decreased, there were certain alarming trends observed. Pedestrian deaths, unfortunately, escalated by 15% this year, resulting in 61 fatalities in 2023. Additionally, deaths associated with alternative vehicles such as ATVs, mopeds, and scooters witnessed a significant 33% increase. Conversely, fatalities involving motorcycles and cyclists experienced a decline of 24% and 22% respectively.
Notably, the number of deaths resulting from failure to wear seatbelts decreased from 61 in 2022 to 44 in 2023. The National Highway and Safety Commission emphasized that speeding and drunk driving remain the primary causes of fatal accidents in Nevada. The U.S. Department of Transportation further highlighted the various risks associated with speeding, including loss of vehicle control, increased stopping distances, passenger vulnerability, severity of collisions, and elevated fuel consumption.
Promoting Safety Measures to Reduce Traffic Accidents in Las Vegas
Given Las Vegas' substantial transient population, the risk of traffic accidents among drivers unfamiliar with the area remains a significant concern. Therefore, experts unanimously advocate for the adoption of defensive driving practices as a top priority.
Above all, emphasizing the importance of adhering to speed limits is crucial, and wearing seat belts should never be overlooked. In fact, the National Safety Commission asserts that simply wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of injury in a crash by almost 50%.
One of the most prevalent causes of accidents in Las Vegas is collisions resulting from inadequate following distance. Maintaining a safe distance between vehicles is imperative. The U.S. Highway Safety Administration reports that one-third of all traffic accidents fall into this category. Particularly during winter, when road conditions can be treacherous, maintaining adequate distance between cars becomes even more vital.
Las Vegas is also particularly susceptible to incidents of drug-impaired driving, including cases of driving under the influence (DUI). Given the city's reputation as a party destination, alcohol consumption is prevalent. This concern extends to the Korean community as well. Shockingly, one-third of traffic accident fatalities in Las Vegas are linked to drunk driving. It is crucial to note that even seemingly innocuous substances like cold medicine can impact one's ability to drive safely, emphasizing the importance of caution.

Several locations in Las Vegas have witnessed an increase in traffic accidents, demanding immediate attention:
1. Tropicana Ave & Koval Lane: This intersection, serving as one of the busiest roads in Vegas, connects the main east-west route through the city and the strip. Due to its proximity to the strip casino parking lots, high traffic volume has been reported, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries.
2. Flamingo Rd & Decatur Blvd: Data from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) crash map reveals a significant number of fatalities and over 60 reported injuries at this intersection.
3. Flamingo Rd Between Paradise Rd & Eastern Ave: This road segment experiences heavy congestion, often leading to drivers exceeding the speed limit of 45 miles per hour. Disturbingly, more than 370 injuries and 9 fatalities have been recorded in this area.
4. Maryland Parkway Between Sahara Ave & Tropicana Ave: This region, near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, remains densely populated. Over 350 injuries have been reported in this vicinity.
5. US-95: Traffic congestion frequently arises at the I-15 intersection, commonly referred to as the spaghetti bowl, during peak commuting hours. This area has witnessed over 370 accidents.
