라스베이거스 내 아시안 민족 중 가장 많은 중국인은 다양한 축제를 가지고 있다. 특히 ‘설날’을 중심으로 대대적인 축제를 매년 개최해 왔다.
그 중 주정부가 공식적으로 인정하는 ‘네바다 150’에 선정된 CNY의 ‘In The Desert’는 12년 동안 폭발적인 성장을 가져왔다. 다양한 장소에서 동시다발적으로 행사가 진행된다. 특이한 것은 중국뿐만 아니라, 다른 아시아 문화도 함께 소개한다. 각 나라 별로 의상과 민속적 컨셉트를 정해 퍼레이드도 벌인다.
2024년 새해에는 2월15~17일까지 축제가 진행된다. 베네시안, 프레몬트 다운타운 등 다양한 장소에서 페스티벌이 열린다. 온 스트립이 중국 축제에 참여한다 해도 과언이 아니다.

아시안 축제는…
아시아 지역사회 개발 협의회(ACDC)에서 주관하는 아시안 나이트 마켓(Asian Night Market)은 참가 인원, 참여 벤더, 후원 등 다방면에서 ‘최대’라고 할 수 있다. ACDC는 네바다에 있는 아시안, 태평양 섬 주민 및 기타 소수 민족 공동체의 전반적인 복지와 교육을 개선하는 것을 목표로 결성된 아시안 그룹이다. 그동안 조직적인 운영으로 아시안 나이트 마켓은 로컬 최대 행사로 자리매김했다.
참여하는 벤더 업체만 해도 50여 개가 넘는다. 장소로 사용하는 컬리지 운동장을 꽉 채울 정도로 참여도가 높다. 한국 업체 ‘대호’와 불독핫덕(Buldogis) 등도 참여했다. 5달러의 입장료를 내야만 하는데도 관람객들의 줄은 여느 콘서트장을 방불케 한다.
하지만 축제 내용이 부실하다는 것이 안타깝다. K-POP공연이라 거창하게 이름 붙인 행사는 K-POP 동아리 회원 몇 명이 나와 메들리 댄스를 선보인 것이 전부다. 행사 프로그램에 좀더 충실할 필요가 있다.

라스베이거스에 거주하는 아시안 이민자 중 극소수에 불과한 일본인들이 자신들의 축제를 꾸준히 이어온다는 것은 깊이 생각해볼 일이다. 베가스 주류와의 단단한 관계성 속에서 조직적인 축제를 만들어가고 있다.
이번 가을 헨더슨에서 열린 아키 마츠리 페스티벌은 헨더슨 시에서 시청 앞 공원을 제공해, 제법 아름다운 축제 모양을 갖추었다. 대부분의 벤더 업체는 일본 음식이 주류를 이뤄 축제의 색채를 분명히 했다. 일본 관람객들은 상당수가 전통 기모노를 입고 참여했다.
라이브 공연은 여느 아시안 축제처럼 허술하고 부족한 면이 많았다. 오히려 기모노를 입고 축제를 즐기는 사람들 자체가 일본 축제의 진면목을 과시했다.

올해 4월 MGM은 아시아 문화와 엔터테인먼트를 기념하는 음악 축제와 엑스포라는 이름으로 ‘WE BRIDGE’라는 페스티벌을 개최했다. 이 행사는 전적으로 BTS를 베가스로 이끌었던 알렉스 강 사단의 ‘K-POP’ 독무대였다. 그야말로 “아시안 축제라 쓰고, K-POP이라 읽는다.”는 격이다.
한국의 예술 문화가 이미 세계적으로 자리하고, 베가스에서조차 흥행을 이끄는 아시안 문화의 대표 주자로 ‘한국의 것’을 꼽는데도, 제대로 된 한국 축제는 구경하기조차 어렵다. 왜일까? 항간에는 코리안 축제가 스프링 마운틴 길에 열리면 그 길에 위치한 한국 업체들이 반대한다는 소문도 있다. 조직적인 화합도 어렵다. 한국의 가수 그룹들이 여러 차례 베가스의 경제적 이득에 크게 기여했음에도 불구하고, 한인 커뮤니티는 스트립의 후원도 제대로 연결하지 못하고 있다.
문화적 유산과 현재의 문화적 파워가 세계를 들썩이는 데도 이민자인 우리가 선보일 수 있는 것은 오랜 관습의 풍악놀이와 부채춤이 대부분이다. 한인 커뮤니티의 규모만 탓하기보다는 우리보다 숫자적으로 열세인 일본의 문화 행사를 주목할 필요가 있다.
‘스프링 마운틴’이 아니면 어떤가. 꼭 된장, 고추장만 팔아야 제 맛인가. 한인 커뮤니티가 단합하여 스폰서를 탄탄히 하면 세련되고 당당한 코리안 축제를 만들 수 있다. 다른 이름의 축제에서 스피커로 K-POP 노래만 연신 틀어대도 떼로 모여 춤추고 따라 부르는 사람들에게 제대로 된 코리안 문화를 선보일 사람들은 우리 한인이 아니고 누구이겠는가.

The Japanese festival, known as AKIMATSURI, stands out for its consistent organization and the involvement of the local Japanese community. The festival takes place in Henderson and features Japanese food as the main attraction. Many attendees, including Japanese visitors, wear traditional kimonos, adding to the authenticity of the event. The true face of the Japanese festival is exemplified by those who embrace their culture and enjoy the festivities. Overall, these festivals contribute to the cultural fabric of the nation by showcasing the traditions and customs of minority immigrant communities. They provide opportunities for cultural exchange and understanding, enriching the spirit of the nation. The Korean festival in Las Vegas seems to face some challenges and criticisms. Despite the global popularity of Korean art and culture, it is difficult to find a proper Korean festival in the city. The event organized by MGM, called "WE BRIDGE," focused solely on K-POP performances, giving the impression that the festival was more about K-POP than representing Korean culture. One reason for the lack of a comprehensive Korean festival in Vegas may be the opposition from Korean businesses located on Spring Mountain Road, where the festival was rumored to take place. This suggests that there may be difficulties in achieving organizational harmony and securing sponsorship within the Korean community. The economic contributions made by Korean singer groups in Vegas have not translated into strong connections or support from local businesses. While it is true that Korean cultural events in Vegas often showcase traditional customs like Pungaknori and fan dance, it is important to look at the cultural events of Japan, which may have fewer numerical advantages but seem to have more success in organizing festivals. The Korean community should strive for unity and secure solid sponsorship to create a sophisticated and confident Korean festival. Simply playing K-POP songs at festivals with different names may not effectively showcase Korean culture to those who attend the events. Overall, it seems that the Korean festival in Las Vegas faces challenges in terms of organizing and representing the diverse aspects of Korean culture. However, with greater unity and support, there is potential to create a more comprehensive and engaging festival that truly reflects the richness of Korean heritage and contemporary cultural power.
