경제, 문화, 교육에 이르기까지 양국 관계 도모에 중점
“저는 대한민국을 대표하는 라스베이거스의 명예 영사로서 봉사하게 된 것을 깊은 영광으로 생각합니다. 대한민국에 대한 깊은 감사와 존경심으로 한국과 미주한인의 이익을 보호하고 발전시키기 위해 취임 선서로 다짐했습니다. 문화와 전통, 경제력, 국가 간의 위상을 증진시키기 위해 저는 최선을 다할 것입니다.”
한국을 너무도 좋아해서 명예영사로 임명된 조 캠포스(Joe Campos). 그의 관심사는 온통 ‘한국’이다. 베가스 내에서 한국인과 관련된 자리에는 언제든지 그가 있다. 지난 11월에는 세계 명예영사의 1인으로 한국 대통령과 정부 관계자들을 만나기 위해 한국을 방문했다. 정작 로컬의 한인들에게는 생소할 수도 있는 그를 소개하기 위해 인터뷰 자리를 마련했다.
Q: 최근 방문한 한국에서는 어떤 성과가 있었는가.
A: 나는 전 세계 명예영사 공식 대표단의 일원으로 대한민국 외교부와 서울, 그리고 부산을 방문했다. APEC 회원국과 아프리카, 중동, 유럽, 미주 등을 대표하는 13명의 명예영사 대표단은 특별 보고회를 통해 한국 경제, 전략적 환경, 공공외교에 관련된 주제를 다루었다. 특히 인도, 태평양 지역 안보 협정의 중요성과 외교적 도구로서의 ‘한류 소프트파워(K-문화)’ 개념에 대해 중점적인 논의가 있었다. 나는 아시안 커뮤니티의 대표적 미디어로 떠오르는 월간 라스베이거스를 자랑스럽게 생각한다.
Q: 어떻게 라스베이거스 한국 명예영사가 되었는가.
A: 나는 전임자이자 전 네바다 주 하원의원인 Pat Hickey로부터 추천을 받았다. 나는 직업상 라스베이거스를 방문하는 한국 무역 대표단과 정부 관계자를 자주 만날 기회가 있었다. 또한 이전에 근무했던 기술 회사인 Blockchains, Inc.를 통해 삼성, LG, 현대 등 한국 기업의 임원들과도 친분이 두터웠다. 이 때부터 CES를 비롯해서 한인 사회의 주요 행사에 참여했다. 엘에이 총영사관의 요청에 따라 베가스 명예영사로서 서울대학교 글로벌연구개발센터 등 다수의 한국 대표단을 초청하여 교류도 가졌다. 궁극적으로 네바다 주의 중요한 공식 상호 작용을 기반으로 주지사 경제개발실, 네바다대학교 시스템 등과 연계해서 활동을 이어 나갔다. 이후 대한민국 외교부로부터 명예영사에 임명되었다.

Q: 명예영사로서의 구체적인 활동 내용은.
A: 명예영사는 대한민국의 이익을 대표하는 자리로 비즈니스 활동을 촉진하고 한국과 지역 간의 문화, 교육, 과학 교류와 협력을 촉진하는 역할을 한다. 본질적으로 LA의 총영사와 한국 외교부의 ‘연락원’ 역할을 중점적으로 한다. 그리고 네바다 주에 기반을 둔 비즈니스, 무역 및 상업 그룹, 주요 관광사업, 호텔 홍보 등 경제 발전을 도모한다. 특히 한인 커뮤니티와의 관계를 구축하고 강화하는 데 중점을 둔다. 이 밖에도 학계와의 연계 창구가 되기도 하고, 네바다 주 재향군인회와도 소통한다. 현재 네바다 영사단 소속이며 NVCC 의장으로 선출되었다.
Q: 현재까지 달성된 성과는.
A: 나는 긍정적인 결과를 이끌어내기 위해 전략적 이니셔티브를 수행했다고 볼 수 있다. 주지사 오피스와의 교류, 워싱턴 DC의 네바다 주 의회 대표단, 베가스시장 및 시의원, 경찰국, 컨벤션 관리국 등 라스베이거스의 주요 기관들과의 협력 관계를 도모하고 있다.
Q: 한인 커뮤니티와 앞으로의 계획은.
A: 한국전과 베트남전 참전용사 지원을 위해 총영사와 긴밀히 협조하고, 대한어머니회(KMA)의 핵심 사명을 지원하며 최근 결성된 K-직업여성협회의 발전을 지원한다. 네바다 주와 한인 커뮤니티의 인플루언서 간의 유대 강화에 지속적으로 초점을 맞춘다. 무역, 상업, 기술 이전 기회에 관여하고, 학술 기관의 교류도 지원한다. 특히 네바다 주와 한국 간의 운전면허 상호성을 확보하는 데 최선을 다할 것이다.
라스베이거스에는 한국인 어머니를 둔 유명인사들이 다수 포진돼 있다. 그들과의 연계를 통해 한인 커뮤니티를 위한 활동을 강화해 나갈 것이다.

Joe Campos, a passionate advocate of Korea, has been appointed as the Honorary Consul General, a prestigious role bestowed upon him by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea. His unwavering dedication to Korea has led him to become an influential figure in Las Vegas, fostering connections between Koreans and Americans. In this exclusive interview, Campos sheds light on his recent visit to Korea, his journey to becoming an honorary consul, and his vision for promoting cultural, educational, and economic exchanges between Korea and Nevada.
Q: What were the highlights of your recent visit to Korea?
A: As part of the official delegation of honorary consul generals representing various countries, I had the privilege of visiting Seoul and Busan. During this visit, we engaged in fruitful discussions on topics including the Korean economy, strategic environment, and public diplomacy. Notably, we emphasized the significance of security of Indo - Pacific region, as well as the diplomatic potential of the "Korean Wave Soft Power." Furthermore, I had the opportunity to present "Monthly Las Vegas," a prominent K-magazine in Las Vegas. This magazine has become an influential media outlet for the Asian community in our city, something I am immensely proud of.
Q: How did you come to be appointed as an honorary consul in Las Vegas?
A: I was recommended for this position by Pat Hickey, a former Nevada congressman and my predecessor. Over time, I had the privilege of frequently interacting with Korean trade delegations and government officials visiting Las Vegas for professional reasons. Additionally, my previous role at Blockchains, Inc., a technology company, allowed me to establish close relationships with executives from prominent Korean companies such as Samsung, LG, and Hyundai. Subsequently, I actively participated in significant Korean community events, including CES. At the request of the Consul General in Los Angeles, I invited numerous Korean delegations, including the Seoul National University Global R&D Center, to facilitate exchanges. These efforts, coupled with my involvement with Nevada's economic development office and the Nevada University system, ultimately led to my appointment as an honorary consul by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea.
Q: Could you elaborate on your specific activities as an honorary consul?
A: As an honorary consul, my primary role is to represent the interests of the Republic of Korea and foster business activities, cultural exchanges, and educational and scientific cooperation between Korea and Nevada. I work closely with the Consul General in Los Angeles, serving as a liaison with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea. Additionally, I actively promote economic development through initiatives such as business and trade collaborations, major tourism endeavors, and hotel promotions based in Nevada. A significant focus of my work lies in building and reinforcing relationships within the Korean community. Moreover, I serve as a conduit for academic connections and engage with the Nevada Veterans Association. Currently, I am a member of the Nevada Consulate Corps and have been elected as the chairman of the NVCC.
Q: What notable achievements have you made thus far?
A: I am proud to have implemented strategic initiatives that have yielded positive results. Notably, I have fostered cooperation with major Las Vegas organizations, including the governor's office, Nevada congressional delegation in Washington, D.C., mayors and city councilors of Vegas, police departments, and convention offices.
Q: What are your future plans for the Korean community and beyond?
A: Moving forward, I aim to work closely with the Consul General to support Korean and Vietnamese War veterans, uphold the mission of the Korean Mothers' Association (KMA), and contribute to the development of the recently established K-Vocational Women's Association. Strengthening ties between Nevada and influential figures within the Korean community remains a priority. We will actively pursue opportunities for trade, commerce, and technology transfer, while also facilitating academic exchanges. Particularly, we will make concerted efforts to establish driver's license reciprocity between Nevada and Korea. Additionally, given the presence of numerous celebrities with Korean mothers in Las Vegas, we will leverage these connections to further enhance our engagement with the Korean community.
