헨더슨 재향군인회 오피스에서 인터뷰 요청이 왔다. 아직까지 지원이 부족한 베테랑들을 위해 다방면에서 도움을 줄 수 있으니, 소개해 달라는 요청이었다. 이 단체는 역시 현역 군인이었던 자원봉사자들이 후원을 받아 도움이 필요한 베테랑들에게 전달하는 귀한 역할을 한다.
11월11일은 재향군인의 날이다. 베가스에는 큰 군기지가 있는 만큼 베테랑의 수도 많다. 특히 베가스의 베테랑들은 생활고에 시달리거나 심지어 노숙자인 경우도 많다. 2020년 기준으로 네바다의 재향군인의 수는 211,114명으로 주 인구의 약 9%에 속한다. 이 중 8%가 빈곤 속에 살며 674명은 노숙자로 불명예스럽게도 전국에서 1위를 차지한다.
헨더슨 재향군인 액션 재단(VAF)은 구체적인 프로젝트를 가지고 있다. 퇴역군인을 보다 안전하고 깨끗하며 저렴한 주택으로 이주시키기, 의료 상담과 취업 기회에 대해 파트너와 협력, 자살 방지, 다양한 재향 군인 서비스를 제공하는 ‘원스톱’ 재향 군인 센터 설립, 의료, 검진, 치료, VA 혜택 지원, 중독, 가족 상담 등의 프로그램을 진행한다. 또한 식품, 의류, 가구 등과 같은 실질적인 생존 필수품도 제공한다.
이 단체에서 활동하는 Ralph McNamara 회장은 “우리는 장애 등급이 10%인 퇴역 군인을 도왔는데, 그의 복무 시간과 현재 건강에 대해 인터뷰하고는 다른 복무 연결 문제를 확인한 결과 장애 등급이 60%로 높아져서 더 나은 치료를 받을 수 있게 되었다.”고 사례를 전하며, “다른 퇴역 군인에게는 그의 가족이 살 수 있는 집을 마련해 주었고, 이 밖에도 자동차 수리, 자녀를 위한 학용품 마련하기, 임대료나 자동차 할부금 지급하기 등 다양한 도움을 실현했다.”고 설명했다.
헨더슨 시에서는 2023년 퇴역 군인을 돕기 위한 오피스 두 곳을 제공했다. 재향군인으로 이루어진 봉사자들은 조직 및 지역 사회에 무료 서비스 마케팅을 시작했다. 이러한 노력으로 현재 도움을 청하는 퇴역 군인들의 수가 매달 증가하고 있다. 현재 63명의 재향군인들을 도왔다. 또한 한국, 필리핀, 베트남 참전용사 단체들과도 협력하고 있다.

Unfortunately, many of these veterans face ongoing struggles, and some even find themselves without stable housing. In 2020, Nevada was home to 211,114 veterans, accounting for approximately 9% of the state's population. Alarmingly, 8% of these veterans live in poverty, and a staggering 674 are currently experiencing homelessness, earning Nevada the regrettable distinction of having the highest homeless veteran population in the country. To address these pressing issues, the Henderson Veterans Action Foundation has undertaken a specific project. The organization is committed to implementing various programs aimed at improving the lives of veterans. These initiatives include relocating veterans to safer, cleaner, and more affordable homes, collaborating with partners to provide medical counseling and job opportunities, preventing suicide, and establishing a "one-stop" Veterans Center that offers a wide range of services, including medical examinations, treatment, VA benefits support, addiction counseling, and family assistance. Additionally, VAF provides essential survival necessities such as food, clothing, and furniture to those in need. Ralph McNamara, the president of the organization, shared a powerful testimonial: "We had the privilege of assisting a veteran with a disability rating of 10 percent. During the interview process, we delved into his service history and current health condition, which allowed us to identify other service connectivity issues. As a result, his disability rating was raised to 60 percent, enabling him to receive more comprehensive treatment." McNamara further explained, "We have also provided a home for another veteran and his family, and we continue to offer diverse forms of assistance, including car repairs, school supplies for their children, and financial support for rent and car payments." In a show of support, the City of Henderson has generously provided two offices to aid veterans in 2023. These offices serve as crucial hubs where volunteer veterans passionately engage in outreach efforts, promoting the organization's free services within both the community and other organizations. Thanks to these dedicated endeavors, the number of veterans seeking assistance has been steadily increasing each month, with 63 veterans having been aided thus far. VAF also collaborates with veterans' organizations representing Korean, Filipino, and Vietnamese veterans, ensuring that support reaches all segments of the veteran community. For veterans seeking assistance, the process begins with a consultation, after which they can submit a VA form.
